Online, Off-campus or Distance Learning Opportunities
Including courses available fully or partly via the world wide web

Here is a list of Distance Education courses a variety of sources available for off-campus learning. Graduate and undergraduate credit, as well as Continuing Education credit (CEU), is available for many of these programs.

Learning Opportunities for Off Campus/Distance Education Students

Virtual Universities & Learning Portals.  Learning Portals are web sites that provide a combination of courses, training collaboration and learner community. Like Amazon for books, they want to be the single place you go on the Internet to find the training you want. Initially set up for the individual purchaser with a credit card, most portals aspire to offer college or continuing education credits of some type for multiple registrations from a single organization. When Academic institutions undertake learning portals, they are generally called "Virtual Universities"

Academic Portals - Consortiums of non-profit universities and schools pooling or consolidating web course listings

  • Southern Regional Electronic Campus - A databases of courses from Southeastern United States accredited schools available by distance education.

  • Western Governors University - An innovative on-line university based in Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver, Colorado
  • Canadian Virtual University - Canadian Virtual University (CVU) is a partnership of several Canadian universities offering 250 degrees, diplomas and certificates and 2000 courses completely online and through distance education.
  • The British Open University  Probably the world's largest distance learning-only organization, it opened and then quickly closed an operational subsidiary in the US.
  • The Morrisby Organization, one of the UK's psychometric test publishers, has launched a Web site to help students and advisors find higher education courses in the UK. At http://www.ukcoursefinder.com, students complete an online questionnaire to identify study interest areas and personal preferences, and a search engine helps to locate a selection of appropriate courses, universities, and colleges.
  • CollegesAndUniversities.org -  Directory of colleges and universities offering degrees, certificates, training, continuing education, online learning. Not exclusively web-delivered learning, so browse intelligently.

Commercial Portals - Portals and virtual universities operated as a for-profit or independent aggregating services

  • Gradschools.com - online source for graduate school information, with nearly 40,000 program listings.
    • Certificates.Gradschools.com - listings for U.S.-based post-baccalaureate certificate programs in a range of disciplines. The site allows prospective students to focus solely on post-baccalaureate, non-degreed programs, eliminating the frustration of sifting through thousands of programs that do not meet their needs. Programs are searchable first by subject, then by location.
  • Technology Degrees Online-IT Programs - Colleges and universities offering degrees in technology in the U.S. can be browsed here by state, degree, or school name.  Research careers in the various fields of technology and see what kind of salaries these IT professionals are making.

  • World Wide Learn - aggregator of credit and professional programs
  • Peterson's Guides - Probably the largest of the for-profit portals, Peterson's started with a comprehensive print catalog of non-traditional learning opportunities and has expanded to the web.
  • Fathom Not a virtual university, but an archive of free course content contributed from member institutions including Columbia University, London School of Economics and Political Science, Cambridge University Press, The British Library, The New York Public Library, The University of Chicago, the University of Michigan, American Film Institute (AFI), RAND, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum (UK), and The Natural History Museum (UK). Fathom brings together lectures, interviews, articles, and exhibits by faculty and experts from some of the world's leading universities, libraries, museums, and disseminators of research. Online courses and seminars representing the best in online education are available through Fathom, as well as books and other products. Unique reference content spans all disciplines and fields of study.
  • Get Educated.com - Listings of programs and courses
  • Distance Studies.com - paid and free listings of courses from selected universities
  • Bakers Guide to Christian Distance Education - specializes in education for Christian learners
  • CollegeNet - An online admissions aggregator, through this portal you can apply to over 1500 college and university programs (not necessarily providing distance education courses). When applying to more than one program you save redundant typing since common data automatically travels from form to form.
